According to recent CDC statistics, over 75% of American adults are considered overweight or obese. Many of these individuals also suffer from weight-related illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or mobility issues.
Most people who have struggled with their weight have unsuccessfully tried traditional weight loss methods and some have even tried dangerous or unhealthy fad diets and non-traditional channels such as hypnotherapy.
They know they need to lose weight and become healthier but they do not know what to do. Most of them have heard about bariatric surgery but they either do not qualify or do not wish to undergo surgery. Are there alternatives to bariatric surgery? Yes!

Alternative Options For Bariatric Surgery
There are safe and effective alternative options to bariatric surgery that most patients will qualify for. Choosing a non-surgical alternative to bariatric surgery has many benefits including:
- Lower cost;
- Shorter recovery;
- Reduced risks and long-term complications;
- No permanent alterations made to the digestive system (eliminates the risk of malnutrition);
- Patients can resume their normal activities sooner.
Orbera® Gastric Balloon
The Orbera® gastric balloon is an alternative to bariatric surgery and is a medical device that can help patients who have a body mass index (BMI) of 25+ to safely and effectively lose a substantial amount of weight. The Orbera balloon is intended to be used as part of a doctor-supervised weight loss program.
How Does Orbera Balloon Work For Weight Loss?
Orbera® gastric balloon works by restricting the amount of food an individual can eat at one time. The balloon also slows down the rate at which the stomach empties so patients feel full longer. Having control over these two elements helps promote weight loss as portion control and constantly feeling hungry are two of the greatest challenges weight loss patients face.
Patients participate in the Orber balloon weight loss program for 12 months. For the first six months, the Orbera® gastric balloon will take up over ⅔ of the patient’s stomach capacity to limit how much they can eat.
The balloon is removed after six months and patients should have experienced a significant loss in weight. Patients have achieved weight loss numbers as high as 126 lbs using the Orbera balloon. For the entirety of the year, patients receive individual monitored support that may include professional dietary & nutritional guidance, physical fitness, and emotional and behavioral health services.

The Orbera Balloon Procedure
The Orbera balloon does not require surgery and is done as an outpatient procedure in about 20 - 30 minutes. With the patient under mild sedation and the use of an endoscope, the deflated Orbera balloon is lowered down to the patient’s stomach and placed in the correct location. The balloon is then inflated with saline until it is about the size of a grapefruit. The inflated balloon will remain in the patient’s stomach to take up space until it is removed after 6 months.
The Orbera® balloon helps patients lose weight and keep it off by teaching them healthy lifestyle habits while the balloon is in their stomach. By continuing the new behavior patterns (eating a healthy low-calorie diet and exercising) they can maintain their weight loss. Check out this patient before and after Orbera results!
Escultura de sutura Gastroplastia endoscópica en manga (ESG)
Suture Sculpt ESG can deliver weight loss results that rival or surpass gastric sleeve surgery. The effectiveness of ESG has been reported in studies as well as through patient success stories which have recently brought this non-surgical procedure into the limelight.
The Suture Sculpt ESG Procedure
The ESG procedure is done endoscopically while the patient is asleep under general anesthesia. An endoscope is a hollow tube-like surgical instrument that is outfitted with a tiny camera. It is carefully guided down the patient’s throat to the stomach while the surgeon observes exactly what they are doing on a video monitor located nearby.
The patient’s stomach size is reduced by about 75% as the surgeon folds and reshapes it into a small tube-shaped pouch. Next, using a special suturing tool, the surgeon strategically places between 7-12 sutures to hold the stomach in place. The procedure takes about 45 minutes to perform and is done as an outpatient procedure so there is no hospital stay involved or incisions used.
