What Can You Eat With a Gastric Balloon?

If you want to lose weight and keep it off for good, a gastric balloon could be the answer you’ve been looking for. This treatment involves putting a silicone balloon into your stomach and inflating it with a safe, effective saline solution to emulate the feeling of fullness. In most cases, patients are inclined to eat less and wind up losing and keeping off weight. At Batash Endoscopic Weight Loss Center in Rego Park, NY, we specialize in these types of treatments and help our patients look and feel their best for years to come.

Dietary Plan for Gastric Ballon Patients

Eating properly before and after this treatment is one way to ensure the most successful results. Most people have to integrate regular, solid foods into their diet slowly. After your initial treatment, you’ll want to be on a diet of primary liquids. Then, you can move up to purees, soft food, and eventually healthy solid foods. Everyone is different, so make sure that you adhere to the schedule that’s right for you and your body.

Before Your Treatment

Prior to going in for your treatment, you need to have an entirely empty stomach. Avoid eating for at least six to seven hours before your treatment, and try not to drink anything for at least four hours before you go in. The only exceptions are medications. Talk to our team about what types of medications that you’re on prior to your treatment day. We will work with you and advise you on what the best course of action is.

During the First Week

The first week after your treatment is often the most critical. You’ll start off primarily on fluids. It’s important to drink liquids frequently throughout the day. Drinking too much at one sitting can irritate the balloon and cause discomfort. Good components of your first week's diet may include protein shakes, drinkable yogurt, broth, water, teas, vegetable juice, and skim milk.

Try to avoid anything with carbonation, and don’t drink any liquids that have solids or semi-solids in them. Drink your liquids in small sips, and sit upright after your meals or snacks to help the digestion process. During the first week, you will want to avoid alcohol completely.

The Beginning of the Second Week After Treatment

After the first week, many people are on their own timelines. Use the following guides as blueprints for what you should and should not eat, but remember to follow what your body is telling you. If you need to stay on liquids after the first week, do so. If you feel like you can move on to the second stage, you can start to add pureed foods into your diet.

Pureed foods should be more than just soft. They need to have the consistency of baby food. Use a food processor or blender to achieve the right consistency. During the second week, you’ll want to eat more frequently. Try to eat between five to six meals a day. Keep them small, and remember to eat slowly, as not to put too much pressure on the balloon. You will still want to drink plenty of liquids and avoid alcohol to stay hydrated.

Good Foods
At this stage of the game, you’ll start to have a little bit more choice when it comes to your diet. For example, you can eat pureed oatmeal for breakfast and soups for lunch or dinner. Try to get high-protein foods into your diet. Lentils are a good choice. You can also puree cooked chicken and vegetables for a balanced meal that will keep you feeling full and happy.

The End of the Second Week After Treatment

Once you feel like you can consume more solid foods, it’s time to start putting soft foods into your dietary rotation. For many people, this stage comes at the end of the second week after your treatment, but you should use your personal discretion when deciding when and how to move forward. Soft foods are a step above pureed foods. You can mash them easily, but they’re not totally in liquid form. Good soft food options include porridge, baked beans, and poached eggs.

Mashed potatoes are perfectly acceptable at this stage, although you should remove the skins before preparing them. You can also have heartier soups with soft vegetables in them, like minestrone. You can have more solid forms of meats as long as they’re very soft. Pot roast is a good option, as is slow-cooked shredded chicken. As with many of the other stages, you will want to stay away from alcohol and soft drinks.

What You Should Eat Two Weeks After Your Treatment

Roughly two weeks after your treatment, you can start getting back to normal. It’s a good idea to work traditional foods into your diet slowly. Although you can drink alcohol after two weeks, it’s good to practice moderation. It’s still extremely important to stay fully hydrated. Use this time to make your diet as healthy as possible. Embrace whole foods, complex carbohydrates, vegetables, and fruits.

Cut out simple carbohydrates and sugar where you can. Processed foods can irritate your balloon and also cause you to gain back the weight that you’d lost. Some people have trouble digesting pasta, white bread, or red meat after their treatment, so slowly incorporate these foods into your diet. It’s essential to get enough protein. Aim for good sources of protein like beans, eggs, and meat. Make sure that you eat plenty of vegetables and fruits too.

What Does The Treatment Entail?

Your gastric balloon treatment involves having a silicone balloon put into your stomach. The treatment itself is non-surgical, and you’ll only need mild anesthesia. Patients are released the exact same day. The balloon is placed inside and filled with saline, filling up your stomach and allowing you to eat less food in order to feel satisfied. Most people wind up naturally eating smaller portions, which contributes to weight loss over time and helps them stay fit.

At Batash Endoscopic Weight Loss Center, we use the Orbera balloon, which has been FDA approved since August 2015 and is highly effective at keeping weight off.

The Orbera Difference

Orbera is one of the most preferred gastric balloon options because it’s totally FDA-approved, non-surgical, and completely safe. It’s also recognized by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy for being safe and highly effective.

Good Candidates for Orbera

If you are over 18 and have a BMI of between 30 and 40, the Obera gastric balloon might be suitable for you. Talk to our team to learn more about your options, and candidacy, and how we can put together a personalized plan to ensure your long-term success.

Using a Nutritional Coach To Stay on Track
