Pérdida de peso segura: ¿Cuánto peso puedo perder en un mes?

One of the questions we get at our practice is "what’s the average weight to lose in a month" when using a particular weight loss tool and whether that amount of weight is considered "too much" weight to lose in one month.

There is really not one particular "magic" weight loss number because a larger person will have more weight to lose, so their number will naturally be higher. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), a safe rate of weight loss is between one and two pounds per week, which would amount to around eight pounds in a month at most.

Today we will talk about some of the ways we help our patients safely lose weight, the weight loss tools we offer, and the average amount of weight you can lose in a month using each.

Safe And Sustainable Weight Loss Looks Different For Each Person

Weight loss is one of those things that is very unique to each patient. Everyone is different, and the way their body responds to traditional weight loss methods will vary. There are numerous factors that can influence a person’s weight loss potential.

Some patients have metabolic issues that prevent them from losing weight, while others may have a hormonal imbalance that prevents them from losing weight. Some people are genetically predisposed to being heavier than others; there are medical conditions that can block weight loss attempts and medications that can cause weight gain.

Then there are those individuals who just live unhealthy lifestyles. They do not get enough exercise, and their diet consists of a host of unhealthy food and beverage choices. One of the first steps in successful weight loss is identifying some of these factors and creating a strategic plan for neutralizing them.

Some Dangers Of Fast Weight Loss

Patients who have tried to lose weight but have been unsuccessful often turn to bariatric surgery for help. Historically, this was the only viable option, but qualifying for the procedure presented only the first of many challenges. The surgical intervention comes with potential risks and side effects, not to mention a long recovery time.

One of the known risks of losing weight too fast is the formation of gallstones. Research shows that between 35% and 50% of gastric bypass patients develop gallstones within two years of their bariatric surgery. Most gallstones form as a result of an imbalance between the cholesterol produced by the liver and the bile that is available to dissolve it. Hard-calcified lumps of cholesterol, or gallstones, can result. The liver, when functioning properly, produces all the cholesterol the body needs, so eating a diet that is low in cholesterol and high in fiber can help prevent the formation of gallstones.

Losing weight too fast can also result in other unpleasant side effects, such as:

  • The loss of muscle;
  • Dehydration;
  • Unstable blood sugar levels;
  • Nutritional deficiencies;
  • Dolores de cabeza;
  • Fatiga extrema;
  • Estreñimiento;
  • Náuseas;
  • Diarrea;
  • Rapid Heartbeat.

While bariatric surgery or using other means to lose weight fast may be considered unhealthy, the dangers related to obesity are even more unhealthy.

Supervised Weight Loss

When deciding the average amount of weight to lose in a month and how to go about it in the safest way, you should consider getting some professional help.

Depending on how much weight you have to lose, there are tools that do not require surgery and can be provided by a qualified obesity specialist that can help you lose weight. These tools can make your weight loss journey a bit easier on you, and having the doctor monitor your progress can help you mitigate the dangers of losing weight too fast.

Weight loss tools such as an intragastric balloon, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), or prescription weight loss medications are effective for helping patients lose weight safely. The average amount of weight loss in a month will be dependent on their starting weight, any underlying factors they may have, the type of weight loss tool used, and the amount of effort they contribute.

Here is a quick chart that shows the average weight loss in a month with each treatment. Keep in mind that with any weight loss surgery or tool, the most significant weight loss always results during the first three months.

Weight Loss Potential by Tool

<table class="iksweb"><caption>Weight Loss Potential by Tool</caption><tbody><tr><th>Weight Loss Tool</th><th>Average Weight Loss in One Month</th></tr><tr><td>Weight Loss Balloon</td><td>12-20 pounds</td></tr><tr><td>ESG</td><td>18% of excess body weight</td></tr><tr><td>Weight Loss Injections</td><td>10-18 pounds</td></tr></tbody></table>

Excess body weight is the number of extra pounds the individual is carrying. It is the difference between what they currently weigh and what they should weigh to be healthy.

As was mentioned earlier, the overall standard for safe weight loss is between 1 and 2 pounds a week, but a more accurate measurement would be around 1% of their total body weight. A person who weighs 300 pounds will lose more weight in a week than one who weighs 200 pounds.

Aside from the health implications, research has shown that rapid weight loss is traditionally accompanied by weight regain within a short amount of time. The most common reason that individuals regain weight is that they do not make permanent changes in their lifestyle or eating habits.
